Product Description
Ship's bells have been used mark the passage of time on ships at sea for centuries. At first, a half hour glass was used and when the sand ran its course, a seaman rang the "Ship's bell" every half hour. If you have ever been on the cold wet deck of a ship at sea at night you'll appreciate the temptation every seaman experienced to turn that half hour glass over before the sand ran out. The sooner to get off watch and below into a warm dry bunk. In the late 19th century, Chelsea designed and perfected a mechanical clock that could withstand the often violent motion of ships at sea (pendulum clocks couldn't) and added internal ship's bells. Seamen have cursed (and blessed) their accuracy ever since. Today they still go to sea but more often they are found in fine homes and offices. American presidents keep them in the White House and present them to visiting heads of state. The clock's silvered dial has deeply etched and enameled numerals that can be seen from across a room. If you wish, the bells can be silenced at night. The Ship's Bell clock is numbered and registered in leather bound movement record books dating back to 1897 and comes in a presentation gift box custom designed by Chelsea. Hinged Bezel. Packaged in Chelsea's luxury blue presentation gift box! Dimensions on optional base: 14"W x 9┬╜"H x 4"D
